Today marked our one year as Permanent Residents. So what were the changes since becoming a PR? There's nothing much really. I still continue to work but with no more contract which means I can work wherever I want, whatever I want and a career break is just within reach. But for Jobert, it brought a new twist to his lifestyle.
As soon as we got the PR status, he immediately resigned from his job as a sales consultant and started contemplating on applying in a University. At first, I was apprehensive with his idea. The first thing that came into my mind was "right che, your shopping pleasure is over." You see everytime Jobert was out working, I usually spent my day off shopping. Going inside those wicked shops gave me a different high.
Once I bought this gorgeous clutch from Accessorize out of a whim. I know Jobert would say "bag na naman?" so I hid it inside my drawer. When I came home from work one day I saw my clutch on my vanity table with a note beside it which reads: Who are you? Where did you come from? much to my surprise.
So obviously when he told me his plans of entering a University, I was crestfallen. All I could think of was our future. We were back to square one. Our future is definitely clear as a mud now. But Jobert tried to talk to me about it. I too, started to think out of the box. All I could think of is Jobert's determination to provide me a much better lifestyle. As what he always say to me "This is all for you."
If not for his PR status, he will be considered as an International student and be asked to pay tens and thousands of pounds but because he is, the government is providing all the financial needs for him. Basically, he's being paid to study. Aside from the massive allowances and bursaries, he also has student discounts to almost everything such as: shops, restaurants, cinemas to name a few. We have discounts from our council tax as well which is a bonus. If only Philippine student life is exactly like this, we would have a happier educational system with no financial worries. But I could only wish.
So the perks of being a PR? aside from work and financial gain, we are getting closer to our ultimate dream: A British citizen to which we can actually apply anytime now.
Living here means our opportunities are endless and the world is definitely our oyster.
